"Edward Penfield has a reputation, not confined to our own shores, as the creator of the American poster . . ." ("Poster Design" by Charles Matlack Price, 1913, p. 222). Even more important was the transformation of the magazine cover into a miniature poster, which Penfield was instrumental in. | x | |||||||||

| x | Penfield's regal women were both elegant and athletic; he never portrayed them as mere adjuncts to the men in his pictures. Penfield often depicted sports on his magazine cover designs, but golf must have been a favorite, as he visited the theme over a dozen times. This is one of the finest of his known golf subjects. Penfield's art has become scarce, probably due to the substantial holdings at the Library of Congress, which include seven golf subjects. A smaller golfing watercolor sold in Glasgow, Scotland in 1997, with a gavel price over $16,000. | x | |||||||||
