x Thanks to all of those who participated in our our 38th auction of Illustration Art. Despite the weak art market, we set world auction records; a Charles Dana Gibson ink drawing even bested the price we realized for an oil painting to sell for $18,400. We achieved very strong results for a Herbert Paus, our cover lot (at $10,925) and a Jeffrey Jones (at $16,100). The promised bargains were here too. The Sundblom masterwork sold for a mere $21,850. x Our 38th auction of Illustration Art had an eclectic mix of subjects (from fairies to locomotives), periods (1880s to 1980s) and genres: comic strip, movie poster, pin-up calendar, children's books, etc. What these works all have in common is an uncommon ability to communicate. That's one of the "givens" with illustration art. The range is typical of our sales, but the selection this autumn is especially strong in fantasy illustration, with works by Willy Pogany, Gustaf Tenggren, and Robert Lawson, from William Timlin's "Fairy City" to Earl Norem's "Conan." There was also a good deal of "Apple Pie" illustration -- nostalgic images of the American good life. x
